Free Yourself By Learning To Forgive

When you are hurt by someone and find it hard to let go, you always carry that baggage with you. You could be hurting due to an ex, a co-worker, or a parent.

In his book, Think Like A Monk, Author Jay Shetty talks about forgiveness not being binary. Instead, he sees different levels on the scale of forgiveness:

  1. At the bottom is Zero Forgiveness – where you are never going to forgive that person no matter what. At this stage where you are stuck in anger.
  2. The next is Conditional Forgiveness – I will forgive but only if they apologize. This is driven by the need to feed our own emotions.
  3. The next is called Transformational Forgiveness – This is where we forgive but don’t expect anything in return.
  4. The one at the highest level is Unconditional Forgiveness – The kind that a parent would have for a child.

The book talks about aiming for transformational forgiveness. Where are you on your scale of forgiveness?

Unburden yourself so you can spend all your energy on something that truly matters.

When you cause pain and others cause you pain, it’s as if your hearts are twisted together into an uncomfortable knot. When we forgive, we start to separate our pain from theirs and to heal ourselves emotionally.
