Turning Challenging Moments into Growth: How to Make the Most of Life’s Opportunities
‘We are given opportunities to change all the time. But we fail to make those changes, either out of stupidity, laziness, or even ignorance’, said Alice Laplante, author of The Making of a Story.
The quote stayed with me for a while. Is this true? I wondered. Then I remembered the times I might have ignored such possibilities, like jumping into the first attractive job after a layoff without taking the time to reflect.
Life always gave me opportunities to change whenever I faced a tricky situation. But I have only noticed such opportunities in the last few years. These opportunities for change meant:
- Creating healthy boundaries with family members who do not know how to take care of their suffering.
- Noticing what upsets me and understanding my triggers before reacting. It’s a long hill to climb, and I am only on the first step.
- Giving the other person the benefit of the doubt and letting go when someone is unkind. It means knowing the other person is also struggling to manage their emotions.
If we keep repeating the same mistakes and reacting to the same triggers, it’s like repeating a grade over and over. Let’s graduate, learn new things about ourselves, and make the most of life’s opportunities.
