One Bright Thing

The Lost Generation

One thing I lost when I moved to the US from India was hanging out with the older generation. We lost connection with a whole generation of relatives like uncles, aunts, and grandparents.

As life goes along, we spend most of our time with friends who become family. Most of our friends usually are around our age group. So you lose touch with folks from different generations and the wisdom that comes with it.

Today I got to spend time with some elderly neighbors, and I appreciated knowing more from someone who had been in the neighborhood for decades.

Listening to their nostalgic memories of folks that lived in our home before us and all the gatherings they had that brought them closer as neighbors all brought me joy.

Life slows down significantly as we get older. The busyness around building our careers and raising families all slow down.

Every conversation with an elderly neighbor can brighten your day and theirs. We learn to look at things from a new perspective and appreciate the simpler details of life. I am grateful to be benefiting from a few such connections in my life.
