One Bright Thing

Gold In The Water

There has been one thing on my mind these past few days. It’s a book called Gold In The Water by P.H. Mullen. The book follows the stories of 4 elite swimmers at the Santa Clara Swim Club California. This swim club is 20 minutes from where I live, making it even more relatable.

There are three reasons why this book appealed to me. The first reason is that my son has taken to swimming lately, and I wanted a book that gave me a closer peek into that world. The second one is because I am a process lover. I love putting constant effort into things and seeing results unfold on their own. The third reason is that I like writing. Someone on Amazon reviews said Olympic-level writing, and I couldn’t agree more.

The author did a great job getting me hooked on the story. The level of detail used in describing these swim events makes me feel like I am there in person.

The mindset required of these elite swimmers that give them the edge over the others is fascinating. Reading the self-talks that go on during their final laps fills me with great joy.

Their self-talk and their coach’s words in crucial moments stuck with me. They stuck with me when I needed the extra motivation to recommit to my dreams. They fueled me when I needed the extra push during my morning runs.

I am grateful for the chance to read these extraordinary stories of resilience. I am thankful for the book as it fills my days with awe and inspiration.
