One Bright Thing

Go, Go, Go

Thinking about what brightened my day this past weekend was a relatively easy thing to do. It was race day for my son. Of course, as a competitor, he goes through various emotions, but the world looks very different from a parental lens.

So many exciting things happen on the day of the swim meet. This particular meet was a local event where swimmers from multiple nearby swim clubs came to compete. The swimmers all have one thing on their minds. Will their completion time be better than the last time they swam that event?

What makes any race thrilling for me is the constant cheering throughout the race. The parents, coaches, and friends of the kids swimming in the pool are screaming at the top of their lungs. All you hear is Go, Go, Go.

Now and then, you see a talented parent who, along with regular cheering, can also whistle. You would have never imagined someone could go from 1 to 10 vocally in such a short time. But, the desire for their kids to do better drives the intense cheering.

I know my child well enough not to cheer for him but silently wish him to beat his last time, so my car ride home isn’t as painful! He is still new to the sport and is figuring his way around. The last thing he wants is more attention. Just don’t let him know that I blogged about it.

No matter my day, an hour on the pool deck during swim meets cheers me up. The commitment of the kids, parents, and coaches is ever-inspiring. I am thankful for the many little things like these that continue to brighten my days.
