Finding Calmness During Work
My One Bright Thing came from my Artist Date this week. Artist date, as discussed in my earlier post, is a solo expedition of doing something that sparks your imagination.
I went to Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University for my Artist Date. While I enjoyed many exhibits, what touched me most was the art from Japanese Americans who created them while held in Japanese incarceration camps. One particular quote from the Artist Chiura Obata strongly resonated with me:
Art training gives calmness. While handling brush to paint or handling a chisel for sculpture, the mind is concentrated to a single objective. Such concentration develops calmness of the mind and aids in good judgment for normalcy in any circumstances.
Chiura Obata
Art to an artist is meditation to a meditator or running to a long-distance runner. Your work requires so much focus that you become calm with the concentration you put into it.
Have you ever experienced such joy and calm in something you like to do?
