One Bright Thing

A Delightful Conversation On My Artist Date

I went to my town’s downtown area for one of my Artist Dates Today. The Artist Dates are supposed to be a solo expedition to explore something that interests you. I explored multiple stores that caught my eye on this particular artist date, like the local book store, a unique gift shop, and an art gallery.

Conversations with strangers uplift me more than anything when I go on these expeditions. I happened to have a friendly chat with someone from the art gallery. We shared our backgrounds, and she discussed various pieces they showcased.

She also talked about various mediums, like watercolors and pastels. She is an artist herself, and we discussed her artwork showcasing a beautiful Italian monastery in pastel.

Are you an artist? She asked. I told her writing is my chosen creative form. We talked about how I attempted painting as a child but didn’t pursue it further when I didn’t see a beautiful end product. How can you expect a masterpiece when it is your first attempt? I wished I had known that then.

I am glad I have let that need for perfection go when it comes to my writing. I strive to be better at it each day. But I am also patient with myself and enjoy the process of getting better.

It’s conversations like these brighten my days. Sometimes, you end up sharing your deepest fears with total strangers but spend years around people with whom you can’t find a connection.

I am grateful for another such experience today. I am thankful for this stranger’s patience in welcoming me to the world of art. I am grateful for her encouragement to try art again.
