Get Rid Of Your Perfectionism To Move Closer To Your Goals

How many times have we heard someone say ‘Oh, I am a perfectionist’? There are too many of us who fall into the trap of perfectionism.

While wanting to do things really well is a good thing, focusing too much on the outcome makes us pay the price. The price is often not even trying something because of fear of not meeting our own standards.

I fall under this category and it took me a long time to realize how this was doing more harm than good. Growing up, I never played sports because it was something that told me where I stood immediately.

It declared whether I was good or bad at something. I would find excuses to sit out of races and any sport with a score or ranking. I think in my mind, if I wasn’t #1 it wasn’t worth it or I feared that I would be judged.

The book I am currently reading, ‘The leader Who Had No Title’ has a quote which strongly resonated with me.

“Success doesn’t just happen because someone’s stars line up.

Success, both in business and personally, is something that’s consciously created.

It’s the guaranteed result of a deliberate series of acts that anyone can perform.”

~ Robin Sharma

So many of us are victims of instant gratification. We don’t realize the entire journey and the effort that goes into being extremely successful at something.

We don’t realize that success is not a sprint, it is a marathon.

As I venture in to my latest passion of writing, I tell myself this over and over:

  • It isn’t about getting it perfect right away.
  • It is more about trying regardless of the outcome.
  • It is about not letting the fear of failure stop you.
  • It is about beginning the journey with small incremental steps towards your goal.

I will leave you with my favorite quote from Michael Jordan. “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I cannot accept not trying”
