One Bright Thing

A One Of A Kind Victory

Representation counts. We have heard it many times before. I am happy to have experienced it recently. The song in my mother tongue has won the Oscars!

Natu Natu from the Telugu movie RRR has won the best original song at the 2023 Oscars. Hearing my language on an international stage was such a proud moment. It was great to share that little piece of history with my son.

Growing up as a minority in the US, these moments play a critical role in how he identifies with his roots. You are not the odd one out, but you are accepted and matter.

Watching how much fun the audience was having during those performances was great. It is hard to stay still to a fast-beat Indian song. I am glad the artists got a chance to perform on the international stage.

The Oscars are more than just an award. It’s an opportunity to voice your thoughts through your work on an international platform. You are not staying there for yourself, but the entire world is looking up to you. It’s the Olympics of the art.

I loved Michelle Yeoh’s call out to all the young ones that look like her. Dreams do come true, she said. She understood the significance of standing up on that stage. She understood how relatable that opportunity becomes to many who look like her—these tiny moments filled my day with joy and inspiration.
